Cube Runner is a simple game where you navigate your “ship” (more like a little arrow) through 3D mazes of cubes. Get to the end without crashing into the cube walls and obstacles, and you get to the next maze. Sound simple? Yes it is. Looks simple? Yes - visually it looks like an old DOS game. Still cool? Absolutely.

The first thing you notice about the game is the level of precision in the controls. Using the iPhone’s accelerometer to navigate the maze, it took me no more than 5 seconds in my first try to crash. After a few tries, I finally realized how little I needed to tilt to navigate the maze. The sensitivity of the game controls — and the iPhone — is absolutely amazing.

That aside, there is just something about the simplicity of the game that makes it fun. Maybe it’s the retro style of the game. Maybe it’s the smoothness that comes with simple graphics. Whatever it is, the game has a special charm to it that I know I will keep on my phone for quite a while. Throw in downloadable level packs - I know it will keep me entertained for quite a while.

Verdict

Well it’s pretty obvious isn’t it? I love this game - simple, smooth, and a lot of fun.
